The Market Street side of campus is sporting a new look. The central stairway in front of Massengill Auditorium was redesigned and rebuilt in 2009. Now, an attractive walkway leading from the stairway to Market Street has just been completed.

The Massengill-Market Street walkway was conceived to enhance and connect the main campus with the newly renovated Market Street residence complex and other nearby buildings. The design provides an uninterrupted visual link between the two areas, and the distinctive pavers provide continuity with the rest of campus, where they are found throughout.

After laying the pavers, project leader and grounds staffer Bob Shupe and crew demolished the old steps and sidewalk next to Market Street and installed a new drainage system. They then replaced the steps. Project elements include: a new curved brick entrance, five steps leading from Market Street up to the parking lot, and new curbs, gutters and lights.

This winter’s extreme weather presented a challenge, but a construction tent was erected so that the crew could continue to work during inclement conditions. It took nearly six months to complete the entire project.

If you don’t usually find yourself on the west side of campus, make it a point to stroll over sometime. The campus is looking great from all sides!
