Roanoke College is hosting a 12-hour dance party for a good cause next month.

On Oct. 5, the College will hold its first Noke-a-Thon, a dance marathon that will raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network, which includes Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital in Roanoke.

Roanoke students, faculty and staff will be on their feet dancing and participating in other activities from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. in the Bast Center.

Students, faculty and staff can register for Noke-a-Thon at www.helpmakemiracles.org/event/nokeathon. Participants will dance in teams.

The idea for a dance marathon is not new. Colleges, universities, and even high schools across the country host dance marathons throughout the year. These institutions have raised more than $62 million for the Children’s Miracle Network, according to the organization’s website.

Roanoke’s fundraising goal this year is $8,000.

Adam LaChappelle, who is one of the student organizers of Noke-a-Thon, said his high school in Ohio raised $8,000 through a similar dance marathon.

“I am hoping that we can go above and beyond our goal” at Roanoke, he said.

Children who have benefited from the care of Carilion Clinic Children’s Hospital will be at the event dancing right alongside the college community.

“This event is for the kids,” LaChappelle said. “A day dedicated just to them is something that they will cherish for life.”

The fee is $10 to register for Noke-a-Thon. The first 50 people who sign up using the promo code, F0RTH3K1DS, will get 50 percent off this fee. Each participant must pledge to raise at least $25. Participants must register by Sept. 16 in order to guarantee a choice of a t-shirt or tank top.

Check out the Noke-a-Thon Facebook page for more details.

There are a few campus events this month that will raise awareness and money for Noke-a-Thon. This Saturday, Sept. 7 there will be an RC Food and Music Festival on the College’s back quad from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The Shack Band will be the musical entertainment for the evening, while The Noke Truck, Awful Arthur’s Seafood Co. and the Salem Ice Cream Parlor will be the food vendors.

The food will cost between $3-$10, and vendors will donate 25 percent of their profits to Noke-a-Thon. There also will be other activities, such as gladiator joust, a caricature artist, a mechanical bull and a dunk tank.

Tickets for the festival are $1 each and can be purchased at the Colket Center Information Desk through 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Stay tuned for more Noke-a-Thon fundraising events happening at Roanoke.
