Help a Roanoke student!

MaDee Boxler, a senior from Fishersville, Va., could use your support. She has been battling Hodgkins Lymphoma since March of 2008. Her family is planning a fundraiser for her in Staunton on the evening of Friday, Nov 13 . It’s called MaDee’s Holiday Market and will take place from 6-10 p.m. There is a $5 donation for admission.

Please see MaDee’s website: http://www.supportmadee.net/Support_MaDee/Events.html

MaDee also recently became the first Roanoke College student to be awarded the Jessica Swanson Spirit Award.  Despite multiple rounds of chemotherapy and tests, MaDee is doing all she can to stay on track to graduate in December.

The Spirit Award is named in honor of Jessica Swanson ’06.   Jessica graduated magna cum laude from Roanoke College in 2006 with a degree in Business Administration and earned her MBA from Virginia Tech in 2008.  These accomplishments would be impressive by themselves, but Jessica achieved these academic milestones while being essentially paralyzed from the neck down.

Jessica was born with a rare muscular disorder, and, by the time that Jessica came to Roanoke College, she had lost the movement of her arms and legs and was on a respirator.  The Spirit Award is given to a Roanoke College student who, in the face of extraordinary personal hardship, has inspired the Roanoke College community with his or her academic achievements and/or campus contributions.
