Honors Conference Week is next week (February 15 – 19, 2010) and will have an environmental theme based on the 1990s television series “Captain Planet – The Power is Yours!”  Each day will be about a particular environmental issue: Earth, Fire, Wind, Water and Heart.  Events each day will be themed and focus on the issue.

Monday
Monday will be “Earth Day” with our keynote speaker at 7:30 in the Wortmann Ballroom.  Geoff Green made his first expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic in 1994.  Geoff’s presentation will take the audience on an amazing journey from Pole to Pole, sharing stories, insights and observations of what he likes to call the greatest classrooms on Earth. Together with his student alumni from over 40 countries, he has developed the concept of a 21st century “Generation G” embracing values that are Global, Generous, Grateful and Green to help guide the way we interact with Nature and each other.  This event is sponsored not only by the Honors Program, but also by General Education, the Office of Community Programs and Special Events, Outdoor Adventures, CAB, and the Biology Department.  Geoff Green will also be visiting a number of classes on Monday.

Tuesday
Tuesday will be “Fire Day” as we welcome Smokey the Bear and the Virginia Forestry Department to campus for lunch, from 11:45-1pm in the Commons and Main Atrium of the Colket Center.  Later in the day we’ll practice safe fire skills with a fire on the Back Quad from 6:30pm-8:30pm.

Wednesday
Wednesday will be “Wind Day” with a kite flying contest on the Back Quad from 4:30pm to 6:30pm.  Prizes will be awarded!  Later in the day we’ll discuss a to-be-determined environmental topic over coffee at Mill Mountain Tea and Coffee on Main Street at 7pm.

Thursday
Thursday will be “Water Day” with a lunchtime lecture from 12pm-1pm in Garrett.  Join us as Dr. Powers will give a lecture about streams.  That night at 7:30pm Dr. O’Neill will lead a discussion after we view the film “Flow” about global water rights.

Friday
Finally, Friday will be “Heart Day” and RC After Dark.  We’ll host a talent show with prizes for best, and worst, performance at 9pm in the Ballroom.  Also that evening we’ll decorate canvas bags, make greeting cards, and show the films Wall-e and The Lorax.

We hope you can join us for these events!  For more information please contact honors@roanoke.edu.
